How to top up your Expresso account

· · 3 min

What you are actually buying

An Expresso top-up is a prepaid recharge code that adds airtime or data to your Expresso mobile line. You pick a denomination, pay, and we send a code to your email. That is the whole transaction. No account creation on some carrier portal, no waiting in a queue, no scratch card from a street vendor.

I have seen people overthink this. The process is simple, but the denominations matter because Expresso splits its options into plain credit and data-specific credit. You need to know which one you want before you checkout, because they do different things.

Credit vs data credit

Standard credit goes into your main balance. You can use it for calls, SMS, or pay-as-you-go data at standard rates. Data credit is tied to a specific data bundle with a fixed volume and a 30-day validity window. If you mostly need internet, the data credit options give you more gigabytes per dollar than burning through standard credit on pay-as-you-go data.

Here is where it gets practical. If you call and text more than you browse, grab standard credit. If your phone is basically a hotspot for everything you do, the data bundles are the better play.

What the denominations look like

These are the options we carry, with approximate USD pricing so you know what you are spending before you open your wallet.

Notice the gap between the XOF 2000 standard credit at about 4 USD and the XOF 2000 data credit at about 5 USD. The data version costs roughly a dollar more but locks in 5GB for a month. Whether that trade-off works for you depends on how you use your phone.

How to buy and apply your top-up

  1. Go to the Expresso top-up page on our store.
  2. Choose the denomination you want, either standard credit or a data bundle.
  3. Add it to your cart and check out.
  4. Check your email for the recharge code we send after payment confirms.
  5. Open the dialer on the Expresso line you want to top up.
  6. Enter the USSD code Expresso uses for recharges, followed by the PIN from your email.
  7. Press call and wait for the confirmation message from Expresso.

If the confirmation SMS does not arrive within a minute or two, try the code again before contacting us. Network delays happen. If the code itself is rejected, email support@blinkcodes.com with your order number and we will sort it out.

A note on the data bundles

The three data credit options all carry a 30-day validity period. That clock starts when you apply the code to your line, not when you buy it from us. So if you purchase a code today but do not redeem it until next week, your 30 days begin at redemption. This is useful if you want to stock up ahead of a trip or a busy month without burning through the validity window before you actually need the data.

The 20GB bundle at about 13 USD is the heaviest option here. For someone streaming video or tethering a laptop, that is the one that actually holds up for a full month. The 5GB option at about 5 USD is better suited to messaging, light browsing, and the occasional video call.

When to pick standard credit instead

Standard credit is flexible. You can make calls, send texts, and even activate smaller pay-as-you-go data sessions if you are in a pinch. The trade-off is that pay-as-you-go data rates eat through credit faster than a dedicated bundle would. If you know your usage pattern is mostly voice, the XOF 1000 or XOF 2000 standard credit options at about 2 USD and 4 USD respectively will stretch further than a data bundle you barely touch.

I would not recommend the XOF 500 option unless you just need to keep the line active for a few more days. It is the cheapest entry point at about 1 USD, but it goes fast if you are doing anything beyond a handful of calls.

Keeping it simple

Pick the denomination that matches what you actually do with your phone. Buy it. Apply the code. Move on with your day. The whole thing should take under five minutes from checkout to confirmation SMS, and if anything goes sideways, we are one email away.
